The Respect in Sport Parent Program compliments the Respect in Sport Activity Leader Program. Currently, all coaches are required to complete the Respect in Sport Activity Leader Certification. This is a key piece to the safe sport environment. Effective for the 2020-21 season, the Alberta Water Polo Association will be implementing the Respect in Sport Parent Program.
This online program developed through Respect Sport Inc. states “One of the most common reasons coaches, managers, officials and athletes, of all ages, cite for leaving sport is unacceptable parent behaviour. The Respect in Sport Parent Program will help define a standard of behaviour for all parents and create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved. Parents want to do a great job supporting their kids. Respect in Sport provides parents with the tools to create and maintain Safe Sport environments. With over 1.25 Million people Respect Certified, we are the Safe Sport Canada Solution!”
All families with a child 17 years and younger, who has registered at any membership category in an AWPA club must have at least one parent complete the Respect in Sport course and become RIS certified. This certification is valid for 5 years.
The cost for each family to complete the Respect in Sport Parent Program online certification course is $12.00.This fee is in addition to any club or player registration fees. The link to access the RIS Parent Program can be found below. Once a profile has been created, parents will select their club under the Alberta Water Polo Association and add their child’s name to their profile under “Child Management”.
Parents who have completed their RIS certification through a different association can simply import their certificate and add Alberta Water Polo to their profile. They do not need to complete a new course. Multiple children can also be added to the same profile.
