Safe Sport

True Sport Movement -Alberta Water Polo’s mission is to promote, govern, support, and advance water polo in the province of Alberta.

Important Update: Changes to Safe Sport Reporting (ABSSCM)

As part of Alberta Water Polo Association’s (AWPA) ongoing commitment to Safe Sport, we are implementing an important update to how maltreatment concerns are reported and managed.

Effective immediately, AWPA has adopted the Alberta Safe Sport Complaint Mechanism (ABSSCM) as the exclusive process for reporting and resolving maltreatment complaints in Alberta sport. The ABSSCM operates under the Alberta Universal Code of Conduct (AB UCC) and the ABSSCM policies, including the Reporting and Independent Resolution Policy (RIRP).

As part of ABSSCM, AWPA’s independent third-party reporting service is ALIAS Solutions Inc., an Independent Third Party Mechanism (ITPM).

This change strengthens our commitment to a safe, inclusive, and transparent environment for all participants in Alberta water polo.

Report a Safe Sport (Maltreatment) Concern

If someone is in immediate danger Call 911 right away.

There are two ways to report a maltreatment concern:

1) Online: Use the “Report a Complaint” button (links to ABSSCM/ALIAS)
2) By phone: Call 1-855-603-0483

Website button text: “REPORT A COMPLAINT (ABSSCM/ALIAS)”

How It Works (When You Click “Report a Complaint”)

You will be linked to the Alberta Safe Sport Complaint Mechanism (ABSSCM) powered by ALIAS and complete the online complaint form.

ALIAS case managers are trained Safe Sport professionals who are independent from AWPA and support complainants through the process.

What the ABSSCM Does (and Does Not) Handle

ABSSCM/ALIAS handles maltreatment concerns under the AB UCC, including serious misconduct such as:

  • psychological or physical abuse
  • sexual misconduct
  • harassment and discrimination
  • neglect or boundary violations

ABSSCM does not handle typical association/club operational matters, such as:

  • team selection / roster decisions
  • suspensions not related to maltreatment
  • match misconduct reports (game discipline)
  • local club procedures or disputes
  • ice time / pool time allotments or scheduling
  • other administrative concerns

These issues should be addressed through AWPA and/or your local club, using applicable AWPA policies (Discipline & Complaints, Code of Conduct & Ethics, Appeal Policy, etc.).

Not Sure If It’s Maltreatment?

If you are unsure whether your concern constitutes maltreatment, please review:

  • the Alberta Universal Code of Conduct (AB UCC)
  • the ABSSCM information pages and FAQs
  • AWPA’s policies (Code of Conduct & Ethics, Discipline & Complaints, Appeal Policy)

If a maltreatment report comes to the attention of AWPA staff, the individual will be directed to report through ABSSCM/ALIAS using the “Report a Complaint” button.

Our Commitment

By providing access to the ABSSCM, AWPA reaffirms its commitment to protect its members and provide a safe and positive environment within the programs, activities, and events of Alberta water polo.
