Referees in Alberta
Alberta Water Polo runs both the Regional and Provincial Referee course every September. These courses are a part of the Water Polo Canada Officials Training and Certification Program (OTCP). Details and registration for each course can be found below.
Regional Referee:
The Regional Referee course is an entry level referee education program into the competition stream. People entering this course should have some prior water polo experience as a player, coach, minor official, or Community Referee. The Regional Referee course is designed for athletes fourteen years of age or older. The type of competition for the Regional Referee is regional and provincial events.
Provincial Referee:
The Provincial Referee course is an entry level referee education program into the National competition program. People entering this course must have water polo experience as a player, coach, or Regional Referee. Referees are expected to already possess knowledge of the basic rules of water polo. The Provincial Referee course is designed for athletes sixteen years of age or older. The Provincial Referee will be officiating a wide variety of experienced athletes and coaches at the Provincial and National levels.
National Referee:
The National Referee course, also referred to as the Water Polo Canada Referee School, is the top level training and professional development program Water Polo Canada offers to its officials. People entering this course must have water polo experience as a player, coach, and Provincial Referee, or are maintaining their National Referee certification. Referees are expected to already possess knowledge of the advanced and specific rules of water polo. The National Referee course is designed for athletes eighteen years of age or older. The National Referee will be officiating a wide variety of experienced athletes and coaches at the National level.

Note: -
All referees must be registered as 'Provincial' or higher and as a referee. -
Clinics will be one day. New referees are required to attend the Saturday, and returning referees attending the Sunday. -
All referees are required to attend the referee clinic at the beginning of the season in order to be considered as an active referee. -
Referees will be paid according to their level of certification, and not to the level of game which they are officiating. |
